Adulsa, Vasaka, Adathodai
Syn.: Adhatoda vasica Nees
Family: Acanthaceae
Description: It is a perennial shrub with lance-shaped leaves arranged oppositely along the stems, featuring prominent veins and a slightly serrated margin. The plant produces clusters of small, tubular flowers with white petals and purple accents, blossoming throughout the year. Its fruits are small capsules containing numerous tiny seeds. In traditional medicine, various parts of Justicia adhatoda, particularly the leaves and roots, are used to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, and coughs due to its expectorant and bronchodilator properties.
Substitutions: Justicia gendarussa: Also known as willow-leaved Justicia or Chinese water willow, it shares similar medicinal properties to Justicia adhatoda and is used in traditional medicine for respiratory ailments and other health conditions. Justicia carnea: Commonly known as Brazilian plume flower or flamingo flower, while it’s not traditionally used for respiratory issues like Justicia adhatoda, it’s within the same genus and may have some overlapping properties or uses in herbal medicine.
Ecology: Justicia adhatoda thrives in tropical to subtropical climates with warm temperatures, ranging from 20°C to 35°C (68°F to 95°F), and prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter and nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
General Distribution: Justicia adhatoda is generally distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and parts of East Africa.
