Syzygium caryophyllatum

Description: It features smooth, grayish-brown bark and glossy, lance-shaped leaves with a strong aromatic scent. The tree produces small, fragrant flowers that are white or pale pink and arranged in clusters. The fruit, which develops from these flowers, starts off green before maturing to a dark purple or black color. Initially, the fruit is firm and tart, but it becomes sweet as it ripens.

Substitutions: Syzygium cumini (Java plum or Jambul) – This evergreen tree produces dark purple fruits that are sweet and tangy when ripe. It also features glossy leaves and aromatic flowers. – Syzygium jambos (Rose apple) – Known for its fragrant flowers and edible fruits, which are typically yellow or pink when ripe, the rose apple tree has a similar growth habit and is used for both its fruit and ornamental value.

Ecology: Thrives in tropical climates with consistent warmth and high humidity. It prefers well-drained, fertile soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH and requires full sun to partial shade. Regular watering is important, but the soil should be well-drained to prevent waterlogging.
